An Italian Greyhound “IG” is the smallest of the sight hounds and is considered a Toy Breed in accordance with AKC standards. The IG standard is 13-15 inches at the withers (shoulders). IG’s that are above or below the standard are generally placed in companion homes.
Companion IG’s are placed in pet homes for various reasons. They may not have been the correct height, their ear set wasn't correct for conformation, their bite wasn’t correct; or their top line was too much or not enough; or they may be retired from the show ring. Frequently, the differences between a conformation and a companion IG are subtle and unnoticeable.
IG’s are tall and have thin legs, which may lead to breaks. Young IG’s in particular believe they are invincible and will often run through the house as if it were a race track made especially for them; jumping from couch to table to chair, etc. This is very dangerous for a particularly young pup. The pup doesn’t know its body well enough on movement or doesn’t have the foresight of his actions. A leg break can easily run anywhere from $1500 to $3000.
Although hearty, care must be taken for your IG in inclimate weather. IG's do not do well in extreme heat or extreme cold. Remember, IG's are INSIDE dogs and should NEVER be housed outside.
The IG is a toy breed and caution/common sense should be used with small or rambunctious children.
Of significance, IG's are EXTREMELY difficult to housetrain. With consistency and persistence, it may be accomplished, but may require constant monitoring. Investing in a good carpet cleaner may be beneficial.
Should you choose to purchase or adopt an IG, know that it is not uncommon for an IG to live for 15 years. Please make that commitment.
I cannot emphasize enough - the IG is NOT for everyone. Please research the breed before you purchase one; and NEVER purchase from a pet store. BEWARE of puppy mills and their lack of health testing and proper care of these loving dogs.
